Sam Smith: Film Without a Past
In 2002 the Finish film director Aki Kaurismäki released 'Mies vailla menneisyyttä' (The Man Without a Past), a film shot primarily in Helsinki. The narrative centres on a man (identified in the credits simply as M.) who loses his memory after being robbed and beaten in Kaisaniemi park near the central railway station. 'Film Without a Past' makes a second erasure as the original film is stripped of images. The remaining audio becomes the anchor for a new visual system that builds a montage language from association, retracing and expanding the streets, bars and façades of Kaurismäki's nostalgic Helsinki.
